Jobs for Vets Program aims to facilitate sustainable employment for post-9/11 veteransThe USA Cares Jobs for Vets mission is to reduce unemployment among post-9/11 veterans, particularly combat injured, Guard and Reserve. The Jobs for Vets program is unique from other similar programs in a number of ways:

  • First, USA Cares can provide financial support to qualified veterans to overcome financial roadblocks to employment. For example, if a veteran needs to travel to an interview—stay in a hotel during job training—even have a car repaired to get to the job, Jobs for Vets can and will help. Over $30,000 of this type of grant assistance has already been provided to eligible veterans.
  • A second unique feature of our program is the focus on career-building training and subsequent jobs. Each participating employer must offer training that leads to a certificate as a qualified electrician, plumber, pipefitter, etc. USA Cares’ employer partners are nationwide in scope and have a wide variety of jobs available for veterans. The third important difference is the screening process that characterized Jobs for Vets. Participating employers know that a veteran referred through Jobs for Vets is a veteran with an honorable discharge who has been engaged by our staff for the best possible guidance with respect to his or her job search.
  • USA Cares Jobs for Vets is funded by private donations. Veterans who qualify for disability benefits through the VR&E program and those with GI Bill eligibility enjoy the flexibility that their benefits afford. Other post-9/11 veterans may qualify for assistance directly related to obtaining employment.

Become a USA Cares RepresentativeWe are constantly seeking key volunteers to represent us and spread our mission.  We can’t help families if they don’t know that we exist.

Reserve and National Guard UnitsVisit your local Reserve/Guard unit and distribute pamphlets about USA Cares. Talk to the Family Assistance Center and give them a briefing about what USA Cares does.  Also, attend the different events and social gatherings the unit holds to talk about our mission:

  • Yellow Ribbon Events
  • Welcome home and Deployment Gatherings
VA Medical Centers, Military Hospitals and Fisher HousesDistribute LapWraps with a smile to wounded service members at your local VA, Military Hospital or Fisher House.  Answer basic questions that service members might have and inform them that USA Cares appreciates their sacrifice and service.  Volunteering in this capacity is easy and fun!

  • Choose a VA hospital, military hospital and Fisher House located close to you
  • USA Cares will make contact with the facility you choose to represent us and find out the requirements for volunteering as a USA Cares Representative
  • After the completion of training to meet both USA Cares and the facilities requirements, choose a time that best works for you to volunteer
  • Put on a red USA Cares shirt and distribute Lap Wraps at your chosen facility once every couple weeks
  • Bring a friend or family member to help
Military Bases and InstallationsContact appropriate departments on base such as the Family Readiness Center (FRC), Warrior Treatment Unit (WTU), Army Community Service (ACS), and Soldier & Family Assistance Center (SFAC).  Another great group to contact are the Family Readiness Groups (FRG), which consists of the family members of service members.  Inform these groups of USA Cares, our mission and services by handing out information, answering basic questions and letting them know that we are here to assist their families.

  • If you currently live near a base, but do not have access to get on, please let us know and we will assist in helping you get a pass
  • We can also assist with getting the appropriate contact names and numbers of the different groups on base
  • Attending a monthly meeting and saying a few words can have a profound effect in informing people about USA Cares
  • Invite a friend to help with distributing the information

MissionUSA Cares provides financial and advocacy assistance to post 9/11 active duty US military service personnel, veterans and their families. We assist all branches of service, all ranks and components and treat all with privacy and dignity in appreciation for their service and sacrifice. We never charge fees nor accept repayment and rely on donations from private citizens, businesses and foundations for all funding.

Our Goal:Our goal is to help restore financial stability and self-sufficiency by giving “a hand up not a hand out.” We strive to reach families at the earliest stage of intervention to prevent further financial distress and suffering, especially for the combat injured and their families.

For our donors, our goal is to give the American people an effective and trusted means of Sharing in the Sacrifice of our service members and their families who are giving so much for our nation.

Operational Philosophy:Services are free to service men and women and their families without obligation to repay. Financial assistance is not given directly to service members or their families; instead, payments are made to mortgage lenders, utility companies, and other vendors. Each family accepted for assistance is assigned an advocate from our family resource center who assures that assistance is timely and effective. These advocates often mobilize additional support for families from other military assistance groups, and the service member’s community of local organizations, stores and church groups.

Our History:Kentuckiana Cares was an idea brought to life by the management of one TV station in Louisville, Kentucky, WAVE-3 (TV) (NBC). Through their efforts, they teamed with the Mid-South Division of the Kroger Food Stores and the local chapter of the Association of the United States Army.

This team of media, retail and professional organizations demonstrated that a difference can be made with the simplest of ideas and efforts. The efforts of Kentuckiana Cares are provided under our History, but suffice it to say that the nearly $121,000 that was raised was well spent. The folks who helped by buying a yard sign can know that they made an impact on that young trooper who, when he called home, learned that his community wrapped their arms around his wife and child, and that nobody went hungry. Simple things like that mean a lot to anyone wearing our nation’s uniform.

We can’t quit on our young men and women, or their families. The call up of our reserve components continues to increase and the demands on our active duty forces are at the highest levels since the Vietnam War. It is not our desire to be part of any dialogue on the correctness of what we are doing in Iraq or elsewhere. It is our desire to continue to make sure that our families know they are not alone.
